Dresden, October 18, 2022
On September 30, 2022, Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer officially opened Saxony’s largest battery storage facility, designed by TRICERA energy.
TRICERA energy developed a 25-MW battery storage system on behalf of JT Energy Systems and is also responsible for its implementation. In the future, the storage facility will primarily store renewable electricity and ultimately help stabilize energy prices as well as the power grid, which is increasingly subject to fluctuations. After all, the mega-battery can store electricity during periods of oversupply or feed it back into the grid when needed. Battery storage represents a key technology for the expansion of the renewable energy transition, as Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer also emphasized in his opening remarks.
The energy storage system consists of over 10,000 battery modules and four different battery types. Its capacity is equivalent to a fleet of 600 electric vehicles. By using different configurations and varying numbers of modules, TRICERA energy is able to integrate the batteries into a stable storage system while the system is in operation. New and used batteries of different types are interconnected within a single storage system, enabling the company to achieve a particularly important sustainability goal: significantly extending the useful life of batteries until their actual end of life. This format and the scale involved are currently unique. TRICERA views the project as a first step toward addressing the increasingly critical challenge of adequately recycling or reusing automotive batteries in the future. The condition of the batteries is monitored 24/7 by the partner company NOVUM, which specializes in AI-based battery condition analysis.
