Applications & benefits

Optimizing in-house consumption

Generating electricity in-house is an alternative to buying power from the national grid. Most generating plants however lack flexibility. Photovoltaic systems generate energy in response to direct sunlight and not at the flick of a switch whenever additional energy is needed. This could result in an unfavourable ratio between in-house-consumption and in-house production. Combining power-generating plants with a battery storage system increases their flexibility. Batteries make it possible to store surplus power, to be used to cover more of your energy needs when needed.

Economic and environmental benefits go hand in hand: self-sufficiency increases, energy costs go down, and less power generated from climate-damaging fossil fuels is used.

Without a battery storage system, sudden surges of renewable energy (blue) cannot be accommodated. Most companies obtain their electricity from the German electricity grid. Depending on the load profile, this can be more or less expensive. Battery storage or PV systems are a smart way to minimize costs. The battery storage system is charged using surplus PV energy. Without the battery storage system, this electricity may go unused. Self-generated electricity can now also be used at night. Less electricity has to be bought in from the grid. Load profile A load profile is the power consumed by a company over time. Load profiles differ depending on the sector and location.

Peak load capping

Even a single high peak load per year can be very expensive. Commercial and industrial clients pay the grid operator a specific demand fee for their highest peak load throughout the year. The peak load can be capped at the grid connection point by using power from the battery storage system. This brings down the grid connection fee. In addition to this saving, peak load capping can also help to avoid expansion costs when connecting to the grid, which arise whenever growing consumption exceeds the available grid connection capacity.

This can be expensive, especially during peak loads which occur in most manufacturing industries. The battery storage system is purposely charged before a peak load occurs. During a peak load the battery storage system purposely discharges its electricity. The peak load is capped, leading to a lower peak in the grid – which lowers the demand fee the company has to pay. Load profile A load profile is the power consumed by a company over time. Load profiles differ depending on the sector and location.

Multi-use and other fields of application

Through their demand-based operational management, our storage systems enable multiple use composed of peak load capping and optimised in-house consumption. Frequency regulation, atypical grid utilisation as a special case of peak load capping and other applications can also be implemented using our storage solutions.
