TRICERA energy acquires a second-life automotive battery storage facility in Berlin and markets it in partnership with The Mobility House Energy

TRICERA energy GmbH, a general contractor (EPC) and system integrator for utility-scale battery storage systems, is becoming an operator of a battery storage facility for the first time and is entering a new business segment with this acquisition.
The storage system is a second-life system using electric vehicle batteries that has been in operation for over five years. It combines 20 liquid-cooled battery modules, each with a nominal capacity of 95 kWh, from a fully electric SUV manufactured by a well-known German automaker. This gives the system a total capacity of 1.9 MWh with a maximum output of 1.25 MW. The storage system can provide balancing power and participates in energy trading.
A particular advantage of this second-life approach lies in the significantly improved carbon footprint of the entire system. The reuse of vehicle batteries that have already been produced avoids the energy- and resource-intensive new production of stationary storage systems, thereby reducing the demand for primary raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, or nickel.
Since a large portion of a battery system’s emissions occurs during the manufacturing phase, extending the service life allows the “gray energy” originally invested to be used more efficiently and spread over more years of operation. At the same time, integration into the energy market helps to better utilize renewable energy, balance grid fluctuations, and replace fossil fuel power plants.
Overall, the reuse of battery storage systems thus represents a sustainable solution that combines ecological advantages with economic benefits and makes an important contribution to the circular economy.
