Hybrid solar park in Wald-Michelbach successfully handed over
Dresden, August 01, 2024
GGEW AG, a provider of energy, telecommunications, mobility and infrastructure from Bensheim in southern Hesse, has successfully taken over the hybrid solar park equipped with TRICERA battery storage systems from the joint project with project developer ABO Energy.
The ground-mounted photovoltaic system not only generates energy, but is also one of the first systems of its kind in the state of Hesse to store electricity as required in the large storage units that are part of the system. It is the largest storage facility in the region.
“If more electricity is generated than is acutely needed, this surplus flows into the large-scale battery storage system,” explains Carsten Hoffmann, CEO of GGEW. The two lithium-ion storage units are located in battery storage containers on the site of the plant and have a total capacity of 5.8 megawatt hours with an output of 1.6 megawatts.
From now on, more than 8,200 individual modules will generate regional green electricity – around 5.1 million kilowatt hours per year – on the approximately seven-hectare site. This will supply around 1,700 households with climate-friendly energy.
“By storing the energy, we can use the flexibility gained to increase the share of renewables in the grid as needed, even at night. […] Storage options will be an important and fundamental factor in the conversion of the electricity supply to renewable energies in the future. Hybrid solar parks are therefore an important instrument for the energy transition and for preventing price fluctuations on the energy exchanges,” adds Florian Grob, Head of Renewable Energies at GGEW.
The project is the result of an innovation tender. The Federal Network Agency is thus promoting particularly grid- or system-friendly, efficient plant combinations of various renewable energies (RE) as well as mergers of RE plants and storage facilities.
